  • Approachable. The recipe is approachable. All the ingredients are easy to procure and most of them we already have in our pantry.
  • Make it to your taste. Make it more or less sweet and add extra ingredients.
  • Cost-effective. Homemade peanut smoothie is cheaper than store-bought ones.

Ingredients and substitutions

  • Bananas give smoothies a thicker texture and are the main ingredient in many smoothie recipes. I use frozen bananas as I don’t want to use ice. Ice can ruin the creamy texture when it melts.
  • Peanut butter is the main ingredient in this smoothie as it creates an ice cream-like creaminess and gives it a special flavor. Choose all-natural, organic peanut butter without additives or extra sugar. It’s OK if it is salted. Peanut butter provides a pleasant nut flavor. If you can’t use peanut butter, use any other nut butter, like hazelnut butter.
  • Milk – use the one you use daily or have on hand. Any type of milk will work here. I used organic oat milk as I’m trying to avoid dairy.
  • The original recipe calls for Turbinado sugar. I’m using caramel Medjool dates. Dates add a caramel aftertaste and pair perfectly with salty peanut butter giving Snickers ice-cream like taste.
  • Protein – use quality whey or pea protein.
  • Non-fat yogurt. Use your favorite kind. Coconut milk yogurt is the perfect dairy-free alternative.

Instructions

Step 1: Put together all the ingredients

Slice banana in smaller pieces and freeze until ready to use. Frozen bananas will keep for 3 to 4 months in the fridge. It is good to have them ready, so you can make this smoothie whenever you want to. You can keep them in a large zip-lock bag.

  • 2 frozen bananas
  • 1 cup (245 g) milk
  • 3 tablespoons (120g) organic salted peanut butter
  • 3-4 fresh medium-sized caramel medjool dates (remove the seed)

Step 2: Blend

Put bananas, peanut butter, pitted dates, pour milk to your blender. Blend on high untill smooth.

Step 3: Serve

Divide between two glasses and serve immediately. Garnish with cacao powder, melted chocolate or nutella. This smoothie is thick and creamy. You can eat it with a spoon like a dessert. Enjoy!

Variations

Peanut butter smoothies are versatile and can be customized in many ways. If you’d like to try different flavors, check out these suggestions:

  • Chocolate: add organic cocoa powder, chocolate ganache or nutella.
  • Ice cream. You can turn this creamy smoothie into the ice cream. All you need to do is pour the smoothie into the popsicle molds or ice cream bowls. Stir in caramel, pecans, hazelnuts or walnuts, and top with melted milk chocolate. Freeze it for a few hours or until it hardens.
  • Fruit bowl. Add fruits like bananas, mangoes, coconut, blueberries, peaches and apricots. Cut the fruits into small slices and put them in the smoothie bowl. Pour peanut paradise tropical smoothie on top.
  • Granola bowl. Add granola to the bowl and pour the peanut butter smoothie on top. Just make sure your smoothie isn’t too sweet. Add less sweeteners or dates when making your smoothie as the granola is sweet enough itself. Granola is usually made with honey or other sweeteners.
  • Tiramisu. Place Italian Savoiardi Lady Fingers (You can find them at Trader Joes, Walmart, Albertsons and World Market) in a dessert glass. Pour peanut paradise tropical smoothie on top and drizzle some sugar-free cocoa powder. Leave in the fridge for a few hours or until hardens.

Storage

  • Fresh. I would suggest you make it fresh and enjoy it fresh. This way you will keep all the nutrients and antioxidants. Besides, the bananas oxidize over time and the smoothie taste slightly changes.
  • Refrigerator. If you have some leftovers don’t worry, it keeps well in the fridge for up to 2 days. The consistency gets even thicker and creamier.
  • Freezer. If you want to make and save it for later, pour the smoothie into an ice cube tray and freeze it. You can freeze it for up to 3 months. When you’re ready to drink, take out the ice cubes, put them in a bowl and leave to hang out for about 15 minutes or so to thaw. Then toss all the cubes in a blender and blend until smooth.

Pro tips

Here are my tried-and-true tricks for the creamiest and most delicious peanut paradise smoothie recipe.

  • Adjust the thickness using milk. If you want a thicker texture, add less milk.
  • If you want to add ice cubes, use only a few cubes otherwise the smoothie may end up too watered down.
  • Make sure you don’t add too many ice cubes at a time.
  • If you leave a smoothie in the fridge for an hour or so, it becomes thicker. You can make smoothie bowl and eat it with a spoon.
  • Why do I use frozen bananas? Smoothies get colder and taste better. Using room temperature ingredients will create a more liquid texture.
  • Purchase a good blender. Frozen fruit will get stuck in the blades and the process will take more than one minute if you have a weak blender. A high-powered blender blends everything in 15 seconds. Here are my blender recommendations.

Frequently asked questions

What is turbinado in a smoothie?

Turbinado sugar is minimally processed cane sugar. Turbinado sugar isn’t raw and healthier than any other sugar. “Raw” means that this sugar has been refined to make it safe to eat while retaining the natural molasses flavor and color. No matter how “natural” or “raw” a sugar claims to be, any form of added sugar is unhealthy.

How to make Tropical Smoothie less sugar?

If you want to make a tropical smoothie with less sugar I suggest using dates. They have a caramel-like aftertaste and pair well with lightly salted organic peanut butter. Your tropical smoothie will be sweet enough, with caramel notes and sugar-free. Another healthy option is maple, agave syrup or honey.

What kind of protein powder does Tropical Smoothie use?

Tropical smoothie cafe uses high quality whey protein and pea protein in their peanut paradise tropical smoothie.
