Acorn coffee is the best thing in autumn. I tasted acorn coffee for the first time while I was studying at university. On a cold winter evening, after lectures, we stopped by a small restaurant in the city center. My classmate offered to try acorn coffee. I was tempted by this offer as I like to taste and discover new flavors. And I never knew such a thing existed. We ordered. I never liked coffee, unless it was served as one drop of coffee with tons of milk. This acorn coffee was so delicious. After drinking it, I immediately asked for one more. As the years go by I forgot about this wonderful and unusual coffee. Besides it happened twenty years ago. A few years ago I remembered this amazing acorn coffee again. Now I collect acorn and make my own coffee. I’m happy to share its recipe with you. By the way, children adore this drink.
Ingredients needed for Acorn coffee
½ teaspoon ground acorns
1 teaspoon sweetened condensed milk or regular milk. I like oat or rice milk and I add a bit of cane sugar.
Instructions:
Add acorn coffee, pour boiling water and leave for 5 minutes. Then add milk, sugar and enjoy.
How to make roasted acorn coffee at home:
- Collect acorns and let them dry for a couple of days.
- Place the collected acorns in the oven, heat at 350°F/180 ºC for ten minutes so that they do not get burned too much. After you remove them from the oven, the acorns peel crumble easily.
- Boil water and add peeled acorns for 30 seconds.
- Drain the water and remove the skins. You can rub them with a cotton towel. Leave them to dry.
- You can roast the acorns in the oven or in a pan over low heat. While in a pan, the acorns need to be constantly stirred. They gradually acquire a golden brown color, but they must not turn dark brown or black. Roast it for 15-30 minutes, depending on the temperature. Do not roast too much, the coffee will be tasteless and unhealthy.
- Grind the roasted acorns in an electric coffee & spice grinder. Store in a glass container. Enjoy!
How to make raw acorn coffee the simple way:
If you want a raw acorn drink, you can also prepare it without heating. Plants lose most of their nutrients during the heating process. This acorn coffee recipe is different from the first one. The acorn coffee color is not as dark, but the taste is just as good.
As soon as I get the acorns home, I peel them. Then I pick the best ones for drying. I let them hang out on the windowsill. It usually takes about a week or so. The place needs to be warm and sunny. Once the acorns are dry, I grind them in an electric coffee and spice grinder. If there are small, undried pieces of acorns left, I let them sit for a few days more. Then I grind everything again until a dry and loose texture is obtained. I put the acorn powder in a glass container and leave it in a bright place for a few days more to evaporate all the moisture.
